Short Explanation
My concentration is a series of clay sculptures from the neck up; each displays a different emotion in both a literal and abstract sense. The front of each head depicts the facial expression of the emotion, and the back exhibits the more abstract element in the form of different shapes, colors, and media.
Long Explanation
The first two pieces are “sadness” and “boredom." I focused on creating a strong baseline for the rest of my pieces while working with the female form. In sadness I wanted to depict the wilting melting feeling of deep sorrow, and with boredom I decided on a value gradient and geometric design to show true dullness.
In my third piece “Terror," I tried to maintain the conceptual strength while improving the cleanliness and proportions of my sculpting. The spiraling and stabbing glass are meant to illustrate the helplessness of fear.
In my fourth piece “Rage," I focused on creating the most evocative facial expression possible. A sense of violence is illustrated with the lashing tentacles coming from the inky black of the head.
In my fifth piece “Happiness," I focused on improving the abstract concept on the back of the head by using mirrors and light to display the floating, pleasant feel that real happiness comes with.
My final piece “Contemplation," needed to be superior in every aspect to my other pieces. I chose an old man to display as much detail and skill as possible and continuing with my glass theme I showed how memory flows from one thing to the next within a lifetime.
